What is a Green Roof?

A building with a roof covered in plants and grass benefits human health; this type of building is known as a Green roof, also referred to as a living roof or rooftop garden. Vegetation may partially or completely cover the roof.

TYPES OF GREEN ROOFS:

There are two types of green roofs Extensive green roofs and Intensive green roofs.

1.     Extensive Green Roof:

Extensive green roofing uses only a single type of grass, typically 3-6 inches deep in the soil, making it lightweight and easy to maintain. This roofing type offers the option of limited plant variety and is commonly employed in residential buildings.

2. Intensive Green Roof:

Intensive green roofing is a type of roofing that has wider green areas and has different types of plants and flowers.  It can also have pathways and walkways. Sometimes, green roofing also contains benches, a fountain and a dining place. Green roofing is 6 or more than 6 inches deep in the soil. Therefore, it is heavier in weight compared to extensive green roofing. It requires high maintenance. It is usually used for big commercial buildings.

Benefits of Green Roofing:

1.     It improves air quality. Nowadays air pollution is one of the biggest areas of concern for the environment and green roofing is Eco friendly which helps in reducing the air pollution.

2.     It also used to reduce the heat and to maintain the temperature. Green roofing makes the building cooler and helps in reducing the cost and energy.

3.     Green roofing is also beneficial for human health. As it reduces the heat and improves the air quality, it helps in improving the lifespan of a person.

4.     Because of its waterproofing membrane and its protection of building from direct UV rays, green roofing lasts longer and has longer life than usual roofing.

5.     Because of its surface covered from grass and plants green roofing helps in reducing storm water problems. During heavy rainfalls it helps in protecting the top of the building from any damages.

Which is a better Green roof or a Cool roof?

A cool roof maintains a building’s cool temperature by reflecting more sunlight and absorbing less heat than conventional roofing. It is highly debatable which type of roofing is better between them. Initially, you might feel that green roofing is costlier but later you will get to know that it lasts longer than cool roofing. Although both green roofing and cool roofing help in reducing and maintaining the temperature but there are some more benefits that green roofing provides. Green roofing also helps in improving air quality, reduces the problems of stormwater and it is Eco friendly which cool roofing is not.
